Discussion: EF on UWP

Discussion item for aspnet/Announcements#170 and other issues with EF + UWP.

Prerequisites

EF on UWP requires UWP Tools 1.3.1, which was release with VS 2015 Update 2. (See https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/dotnet/2016/04/18/whats-new-for-the-net-native-compiler-and-runtime-in-visual-studio-2015-update-2/.)

Current known issues

• Queries with anonymous types may fail on .NET Native. .NET Native: LINQ query with anonymous types throw NullReferenceException #5119
• EF queries on .NET Native are much slower than CLR. See .NET Native - Perf: LINQ queries run slower on Release mode #5570
• Package Manager Console commands cannot run without manually adding binding redirects. See UWP commands: generate binding redirects #5471
• DataAnnotations (attributes) don't work with EF commands DataAnnotations not working in UWP at design-time #5945
