Since this library is GPLv2 licensed ☹ we can't use it. In #3 @SphericalKat mentioned that there is work on a MIT licensed version.

The fuzzywuzzy repository is now archived and re-released by the same author as thefuzz which is MIT licensed. Could this library do a rewrite using the thefuzz project as source and release under the MIT license?

Another related library RapidFuzz is also a rewrite that is MIT licensed.

@rich-j thanks for the info!
That sounds like a great idea. I'll begin work on a rewrite/port.

I'm wondering whether people will prefer the package name to remain the same, or if it should also be renamed to thefuzz?

If folks have an opinion, please let me know in this issue. I'll keep it open until the rewrite/port is complete.
